JAICI has been building dictionaries and software for machine translation for more than 20 years, in an attempt to enable Japanese users of online CAS information to search in Japanese and to read the output in Japanese.

JAICI's translation system is now used for incorporating Japanese technical terms into CA Lexicon for searching and for displaying Japanese-language titles (about 4,000 a day) of the hit output from CAplus file on STN.

JAICI also provides English-language abstracts machine-translated from the original summaries of Japanese patent documents to help foreign STN users in quick access to Japanese patents. These machine-translated abstracts are later replaced by the abstracts prepared by expert document analysts.
